Why is missions important?
Missions is important, because Jesus commanded it. Before He ascended to heaven, he said to His disciples: “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20.
The apostle Paul wrote in Romans 10:14-15: “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!’”
As Jesus taught about the final judgment, He said, “Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’”
Why does our church do missions?
As a church we seek to be obedient to God’s command and to the opportunity we have to share Him with our world. We desire to have “hands-on” involvement in local, Texas, North American, and world missions. In addition to providing funds and prayer support, we want to be vital participants on the field. In all we do, the bottom line is to share Jesus’ love with people and to do all that we can to bring them to a personal relationship with Him. That’s what Jesus did when He walked here on earth. He fed the hungry, He healed the hurting, He loved those who were different, and He sat with the outcasts. We want to glorify Him!
How can I get involved?
Give. The missionaries we support through the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering, and the Mary Hill Davis Offering are supported by our giving. Not having to raise their own support, they can better focus on their mission. Also, when our local church members respond to mission projects requiring travel and expenses, we can give to participate financially in the work they are doing.
Pray. Prayer is SO important to both career missionaries and to short-term volunteers, including those from our church. We can also pray for God to show us how we can best be involved in missions. He has equipped us in different ways. We need to seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit in responding.
Go. When we feel called to participate in a mission project, we need to GO! That may be locally, the immediate area, or miles away. But when the call comes, our response needs to be, “Lord, send me!”
