How Firm A Foundation
God’s People
Reading God’s Word
January 8 – January 11, 2015

All around the world skyscrapers reach high into urban horizons creating beautiful cityscapes. Few people, who admire the heights that these buildings reach, realize just how deep they plunge beneath the surface of the ground. To offset the height and weight of the building and the geological conditions surrounding the building, architects must first determine what kind of a foundation is necessary for the towering high-rise to endure through time. Some foundations can reach as far as 150 feet deep. That is more than 12 stories down before it goes up! It takes a well constructed, element-enduring foundation to create a long lasting edifice for a community to enjoy. These architectural monuments stand as a testimony to the creative, industrious efforts of men and women who took the time to construct a firm foundation before any visible steel structure ascended vertically for all to see.
The faith of God’s people should be just as visible as a high-rise building, which means that a firm foundation is just as important. In the opening line of the 18th century hymn, “How Firm a Foundation”, the unknown author writes:
How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord, is laid for your faith in His excellent Word!
What more can He say than to you He hath said, to you who for refuge to Jesus have fled?
Recognizing the challenges that this life poses to Christian faith means there must be a firm foundation. That foundation is laid out for us in God’s “excellent Word”.
To draw the attention of God’s people to His Word, we will be reading His Word aloud as a church family beginning Wednesday, January 8, 2015 through Saturday, January 10, 2015. We are inviting each of our church family members, young and old to sign up to read God’s Word for 20 minutes at a time in our auditorium, acknowledging that there is no greater foundation for our faith than that which He has laid for us in the Bible. Couples and families are already signing up together. Don’t miss the opportunity to create a memory of faith expression by taking the time to come together as families to commit to the inestimable importance of God’s Word to God’s People. You may sign up at: www.crossroadsbcfamily.org using the link provided or you may sign up in the Missions and Ministry Center. You can sign up for more than one slot on more than one day. Please join us as we commit this year to being a people of God’s Word.
