How Firm A Foundation
God’s People Reading God’s Word
January 6 – January 9, 2015
Early Monday morning, December 14, the trucks began to hum, the headlights burned bright once again, and then one by one the brown and white delivery trucks pulled out of the Blue Bell distribution center on Eastman Rd. just south of I-20. Loaded with over 100,000 half-gallons of vanilla, chocolate, cookies and cream, pistachio almond, and peppermint ice cream, Blue Bell was returning to the shelves of our grocery stores after an eight month exile. Facebook and Twitter lit up with joy and excitement, pictures of Blue Bell delivery trucks, stacks of half-gallons of ice cream, and hashtags like #BlueBellfamine2015, #thewaitisover, and #survivor. The Rice family also purchased their allotment and enjoyed the sweet indulgence of the best tasting ice cream in the country.
I was reminded as I served myself some cookies and cream that in all the hysteria surrounding the re-distribution of ice cream there is something far better. Better than the perfectly melted stage of your favorite flavor or just the right amount of chocolate syrup. Certainly better than the regret of that extra spoon or bowlful that leaves your belly bloated. It is not a thing, it is a person. His name is Jesus.
He is above all things, before all things, and because of Him all things exist (Colossians 1:15-19) He has been given a name that is above every and has been highly exalted in the heavenly places, as a matter of fact the mere mention of His name on the great Day of His second coming will cause all people everywhere to fall on their knees and confess with their mouths that Jesus is Lord! (Philippians 2:10-11) He has defeated the great enemies of sin and death, by being obedient to His Father all the way to His execution on a Roman cross (Genesis 3:15; 1 Corinthians 15:55-56; Philippians 2:8). He was taking our place on that cross, being punished for our transgressions (Isaiah 53:1-12). Humbled and humiliated, beaten and pierced, mocked and insulted, He was separated from His Father for the first time in all eternity so that you and I could be brought near to God (Ephesians 2:17-22).
As I consider these truths, I am overwhelmingly convinced that Jesus is better than Blue Bell! That might seem to you to be an obvious statement, but as I examine my excitement and anticipation over the return of my favorite ice cream, I get a little embarrassed at the comparative indifference towards the arrival and return of Jesus. May my hashtags and my life reflect one simple truth: #JesusIsBetter!
This is the story of all scripture, Jesus is Better! This is why we will stop and read God’s Word from Genesis to Revelation, to proclaim that Jesus is Better! I invite each member of Crossroads Baptist Church to join us in the reading of God’s Word. Sign-up at www.crossroadsbcfamily.org by clicking on the “How Firm a Foundation” banner and join us as we honor the Word of God by reading every word from the Genesis to Revelation.
