The “13” The “13” “In 1947 a few families, in the community of Crossroads in the pineywoods of East Texas, decided there was a need for a Southern Baptist Church. They met at the grocery store belonging to Mr. and Mrs. A.F. Elsberry. With help from East Texas Baptist College, the Crossroads Baptist Church was organized.”

These are the opening lines of the history of the church that gathers at 11763 FM 31, the Crossroads Baptist Church. “A few families”, all total there were 13 people who professed their faith in Christ and sought to plant a Southern Baptist church in the Crossroads community. I don’t know for sure, but there may have been some doubts as they huddled around the wood heaters that warmed the empty store building they met in. But those “13” faithful did not waver, they moved down the road onto an acre of land given by the Elsberry’s to build a building. For the next 25 years the Church met in that original structure. In 1972 they added on an annex, where our Faithful Workers meet and the Library now sits. For 20 years that space was used for Sunday School and fellowship. In 1992 another building was completed, the present nursery and preschool wing, it was added to increase Sunday School and fellowship space. The Lord added to the Faithful and by 2001 a separate building for fellowship and temporary worship was constructed, as the previous worship and fellowship space was transformed into classrooms. In November 2005, the Crossroads family, gathered for worship in a beautiful new space dedicated for the Preaching of God’s Word and the Praise of His name. In 2010-2013 another structure was erected for children, youth, and adults to gather for bible study and discipleship. We call it the Berea Building, after the Bereans of Acts 17:11 who examined the scriptures carefully. When we look around us there are great reasons to give God praise.

But there is so much more to Crossroads than the buildings. Now, in 2017, we celebrate all that God has done in the building up of His Church that’s been gathering at Crossroads since the “13” first met on February 28, 1947. Many have come to trust Christ as their Savior and Lord. Thousands of miles have been traveled to share the Good News of Jesus. Voices have been lifted in glad-hearted praise of God’s grace. For seven decades thousands of children and students have been loved on and shared in the joys of Vacation Bible School, Camps, and hours upon hours of great encounters with God and each other.

What will be next? Who will join the courageous obedience of this great cloud of witnesses to God’s faithfulness?

I pray that we join together in the spirit of the “13” to see God’s plan for His church at Crossroads through to the end.

Yours Faithfully,

Bro. David
